Maximilian's Fountain, Bratislava Overview

The Maximilian's Fountain, also known as the Roland's Fountain, is a historic landmark situated in the heart of Bratislava's Old Town, prominently located in the Main Square (Hlavné námestie). It features a massive circular basin approximately 9 meters in diameter, with a central column rising 10.5 meters high, topped by a statue of a knight in armor. It is the oldest standing fountain in Bratislava.

Commissioned in 1572 by King Maximilian II of Hungary, the fountain was originally constructed to serve as a public water supply for the city. Beyond its practical purpose, it has become entwined with local folklore. One legend suggests that at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, the knight atop the fountain turns and bows toward the Old Town Hall, honoring the twelve councillors who once sacrificed their lives to save the city. Another tale claims that on Good Friday, the knight comes to life, waving his sword to reassure residents of his continued protection; however, only a native-born citizen of Bratislava with a pure heart can witness this event.
