Michael's Gate, Bratislava Overview

Michael's Gate (Michalská brána) is a historic city gate located at the eastern entrance of Bratislava's Old Town. Built around 1300, it is the only remaining gate from the city's medieval fortifications and stands as one of Bratislava's oldest structures. The gate is renowned for its distinctive 51-meter-high tower, topped with a Baroque-style onion dome added during renovations in 1758. Today, Michael's Gate houses the Museum of Arms.

Originally constructed in the 14th century, Michael's Gate was part of a larger fortification system that included four main gates: Laurinc Gate, Fishermen's Gate, Vydrica Gate, and Michael's Gate. Over time, the other gates were demolished, leaving Michael's Gate as the sole survivor. The tower underwent significant Baroque-style reconstruction in 1758, during which the statue of St. Michael slaying a dragon was placed atop the structure. The gate's strategic location made it a vital entry point into the medieval city, and its preservation offers a glimpse into Bratislava's fortified past.
