Old Town Hall, Bratislava Overview

The Old Town Hall is a historic complex located in the heart of Bratislava's Old Town, between the Main Square (Hlavné námestie) and Primate's Square. Dating back to the 14th century, it stands as one of the city's oldest stone buildings and has served various roles throughout its history, including that of a city hall and a marketplace. Its notable features include the colorful tiled roof and the tower, which offers panoramic views of Bratislava's historic center.

The Old Town Hall was formed in the 15th century by merging several adjacent townhouses, notably the house of the city's reeve, Jacobus, who died in 1374. Over the centuries, it underwent multiple reconstructions, reflecting various architectural styles. After an earthquake in 1599, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, and in the 18th century, the tower received a Baroque makeover. Since 1868, the Old Town Hall has housed the Bratislava City Museum, the oldest museum in the city. The museum's permanent exhibition focuses on the city's history, featuring artifacts from medieval times to the present. Highlights include displays on the medieval justice system, original furnishings from the municipal court, and various historical artifacts.
