Slavin War Memorial, Bratislava Overview

The Slavín War Memorial is a significant monument and military cemetery located on a hill overlooking Bratislava. It honors the 6,845 Soviet soldiers who lost their lives during the liberation of the city in April 1945. The memorial complex features a 42-meter-tall obelisk topped with a 12.5-meter statue of a Soviet soldier holding a flag, symbolizing victory.

The site includes six mass graves and 278 individual graves, serving as the final resting place for the fallen soldiers.Inscriptions around the base of the monument list Slovak cities liberated by the Red Army during their westward advance in 1944 and 1945.Constructed between 1957 and 1960, Slavín was inaugurated on April 3, 1960, marking the 15th anniversary of Bratislava's liberation from Nazi occupation. The memorial was designed by architect Ján Svetlík and has been designated a National Cultural Monument since 1961.
