The Slovak National Gallery (SNG) is a prominent art institution located along the Danube riverfront in Bratislava's Old Town. Established in 1949, it serves as the leading gallery in Slovakia, housing an extensive collection of Slovak and international artworks. Visitors are drawn to its diverse exhibitions, which span from Gothic and Baroque art to contemporary pieces, as well as its architectural blend of historical and modern design.
The SNG comprises two main interconnected buildings: the historical Esterházy Palace and the Water Barracks. The Esterházy Palace, a baroque edifice, was adapted for gallery purposes in the 1950s, while the Water Barracks received a modern extension in the 1970s. This combination offers visitors a unique architectural experience. The gallery's collection includes approximately 60,000 art pieces of both domestic and foreign origin, featuring works from various periods and styles.
