St. Martin's Cathedral, Bratislava Overview

St. Martin's Cathedral is a prominent Gothic church located at the western edge of Bratislava's historical city center, directly below Bratislava Castle. As the largest and one of the oldest churches in the city, it is renowned for serving as the coronation site for Hungarian monarchs between 1563 and 1830. Its tower is one of its best feature that can be seen prominently in the city's skyline.

The cathedral's construction began in the early 14th century on the site of a previous Romanesque church from 1221. Consecrated in 1452, it features a three-nave Gothic design with influences from Vienna and Prague. Notably, the cathedral's tower was integrated into the city walls, serving a defensive role. The interior houses significant artifacts, including a baroque statue of St. Martin of Tours and the oldest object in the temple, the bottom of the Baptistery from 1410.
