The Liberty of Bruges, popularly known as Brugse Vrije, is located in Burg Square and is the former judicial court of Bruges. The ticket to Brugse Vrije is joint with the Town Hall next door.
This golden trimmed building holds city archives and history of the city that dates back to the 12th century. The stone façade of the courthouse has intricate detailing and leads to a renaissance hall that was once the Aldermen’s Chamber where justice was served. A centre mantelpiece, striking ceiling and illustrious paintings don’t fail to draw attention. What adds more to the beauty is the Charles V chimneypiece of the Flemish Renaissance. The visit gets more informative and interesting with an audio guide available on their website.
