Schenzyi Thermal Bath, Budapest, Budapest Overview

Being more than 100 years old, the Schenzyi thermal bath is visited by about 100 million bathers worldwide. With much popularity and praised attraction by visitors, the place is an enjoyable, relaxing, and medicinal experience. It is located in the city centre and has both indoor and outdoor pools.

With almost 125 thermal springs in Budapest itself, Schenzyi Spa was earlier referred as Artesian spa in the 1880’s. Built in Neo-Baroque style and located at the city center, the baths were designed for medicinal purposes. Though today the baths are no similar to the times where Roman settlers first built the baths here, you get to see a variety of them now. Some are inspired by the Turkish; some of Art Nouvea style and rest are contemporary and immaculate. Formerly designed by Győző Czigler, the first construction dates back to May 7, 1909 with designs from architect Eugene Schmitterer.

Covered on an area of 6200 square metres in 1913, a total of 2, 00,000 bathers visited here with separate bathing and steam rooms for both men and women. After further expansion in 1927 and 1938 today the Schenzyi Thermal Bath has 15 indoor and 3 outdoor pools. Unlike earlier people of both sexes can now visit thermal and swimming pools at the same timings as well.

Units inside Schenzyi Thermal Bath

Mostly consisting the same layouts be it a Turkish baths or Schenzyi with both indoor and outdoor pools having a set temperature. Open every single day of the year the place also has massage rooms, hospital, sauna or thermal spa and ice-cold plunge pools.

 The thermal section area includes indoor thermal pool (28°-40° C), ice cold pool (20° C) and an immersion pool (18°C). The two outdoor swimming Pools, one 50 meter long (26°-28° C) and other called as the activity pool (30°-34° C) have a depth range of 1-5 m respectively. One thermal indoor water pool (38°C), two indoor immersion swimming pools (18° C) also have a depth range of 1-3 m. The Day care hospital has 1 preparatory, 1 learning and 1 underwater traction pool with a water depth between 1-2 m and temperatures of 30°-34° C.

Types of Baths in Budapest

Kiraly Bath: One of the oldest Turkish baths, Kiraly type offers you an ambience similar to travel back period of Turkish pashas who ruled the Buda Castle once. Kiraly Bath has an attribute of dim light, warm thermal water, octagonal pools or ilidzas and includes unisex pool availability. Nothing much have changed by keeping the interiors restored for many decades now, this bath has holes on its dome to pass on natural lights.

Veli Bej Bath: Formerly known as Császár Bath, this one is located on the other side of Hotel Csasza and is less touristy as compared to the rest. Considered as a secret spot of Budapest, it was first built in the 16 th century and later had an extension in the 19th century. With 5 thermal pools of different temperatures, Jacuzzi, massage areas and hydrotherapy tubs with well-waters of Lukacs Baths and Margaret Island. Consisting of essentials elements of calcium, magnesium, sulphate, sodium and fluoride ions, the medicinal water can treat joint pain, arthritis and most physical injuries.

Gellért Baths: This type has most beautiful indoors and popular amongst the tourists visiting Budapest. Decorated with Art Nouvea furnishings, stained glass ceilings and windows, statues and mosaic art walls, Gellért Baths is a calming yet exciting experience altogether.

Balneotherapy offered here includes treatment of a disease by immersing the body in mineral springs. Leisure pool and Whirlpool are great options for people who just want to enjoy the waters especially the kids. Children above the age of 14 are allowed at Schenzyi Thermal Bath and toddlers below the age of 3 can only sit outside the pool.

Both men and women are allowed in any pool only with appropriate clothing like the swimming costume. Cabin and lockers are available to keep your belongings and electronic bracelet is given to visitors for security purpose. Gellért Baths have a more traditional approach for lockers where a cabin guard assists you to book a locker on payment of certain amount.
