Whirling Dervish is performed by the members of the Sufi fraternity when they elaborately whirl, as it is said to achieve a release of the soul from earthly ties. This can be witnessed live in Bursa. You can watch this happen at the Karabaş-i Veli Culture Centre.
Even though whirling dervish is solely a religious ceremony and with regards to meditation, many ceremonies are only performed for the sake of tourism. The whirling is seen as a symbolic imitation of the planets in the Solar System orbiting around the sun. When performed, it is said to let go of one’s ego and desires, calming them down as one focus on the music and God. It is truly a mesmerising experience to witness.
