Saqqara, just a short drive south of downtown Cairo, is a home to Egypt's oldest pyramid and is the largest archaeological site in Egypt. The necropolis of Saqqara houses eleven-step pyramids, which are burial grounds for old pharaohs. Major attractions onsite include the Step Pyramid of Djoser, Mastaba of Ti, Serapeum, Pyramid of Unas, and Mastaba of Mereruka.
Saqqara's history stretches back thousands of years. ver 17 pharaohs, along with their families and important officials, were laid to rest here over a span of more than 3,000 years. One of Saqqara's most iconic landmarks is the Pyramid of Djoser, an example of ancient engineering and craftsmanship. This stepped pyramid is the oldest known stone-cut monumental structure in the world. Though entry into the pyramid is restricted, its imposing presence still captivates visitors to this day.
Other key attractions: Pyramid of Teti, The Serapeum, Imhotep Museum
While there are no public transport options to Saqqara from Cairo, visitors can hire a private taxi for independent exploration. Alternatively, many travel agencies and tour companies offer half or full-day tours to Saqqara, often including visits to nearby sites such as Memphis and the Dahshur necropolis.
Other Important Objective Information : Consider visiting on a Friday or Saturday to avoid weekday traffic, and arrive early to beat the midday heat. There is little to no shade in the area, so come prepared.
