Located on the island of La Gomera, the Alto de Garajonay is the highest peak of the island. It offers panoramic views of La Gomera, La Palma, Tenerife, El Hierro, and Gran Canaria along with a beautiful hike. It is situated in the Garajonay National Park, which is also one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Alto de Garajonay refers to the rock formations of Garajonay which has a height of 1487 m. Considered to be one of the best examples of Canarian subtropical forest, commonly known as laurisilva, it also includes a small plateau in its vicinity. The national park is known as laurisilva as this is where the largest laurel trees on the island could be found. There are also some former volcanoes there whose shapes have now been eroded. Trekking is one of the most popular activities of the region. It is also a treasure trove for bird watchers as people can spot laurel pigeons and Bolle's pigeons here.The park as well as the peak have been named after Gara and Jonay, two lovers whose romance is similar to Romeo and Juliet.
