Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

The island of Gran Canaria is one of the most popular tourist spots when visiting the Canaries. Located 90 miles off the African coast, almost half of the island is under the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The northern part of the island is characterised by tall cliffs, while the southern region is adorned with the beauty of the beaches. Influenced by the Spanish colonial past, the city has an interesting background legacy. The most important architectural marvel here is the 16th century cathedral which is built in the neoclassical style along with a Gothic interior. There is a Diocesan Museum in the south wing of the cathedral which has a wide collection of religious and ceremonial objects. Museum of the Canary Islands is also a very famous museum which shows the pre Hispanic culture of Gran Canaria. The Nestor Museum on the island showcases the works of Nestor Martin Fernandez de la Torre, a Spanish symbolist artist. Gran Canaria is also famous for its beautiful beaches like the Las Canteras Beach, La Playa Jinamar and many others. Jardin Botanico Viera y Clavijo is yet another major attraction of this island.
