Greenmarket Square is a historical square in Cape Town known for its lively market filled with stalls selling clothes, jewellery, food, and knick-knacks. Live music is a salient feature of Greenmarket Square, with free formal concerts and buskers and musicians playing on the streets throughout the day.
Greenmarket Square was established in 1696 during the Dutch occupation when the first Burgher Watch House was built. This building still stands today and now acts as a viewing space for 17th-century art from Netherland. The Square was often a centre for political protests due to its proximity to the Parliament and the ethnic mix of people who work here.
