Mazi Underground City, Cappadocia Overview

Located approximately 18 kilometers south of Ürgüp and 10 kilometers east of Kaymaklı Underground City is Mazı Underground City. The city, originally known as Mataza, showcases rock-carved tombs and churches. This underground refuge spans eight levels and could accommodate up to 6,000 people for prolonged periods.

The city features four distinct entrances, each leading to a central hall. The main entrance is cleverly concealed with a rolling stone, enhancing its defensive capabilities. Inside, visitors can explore a variety of spaces, including barns with carved troughs, a winery accessed via a chimney, living quarters, and a church with a hidden chimney leading to other parts of the cave system. The church's chimney, adorned with small steps, showcases the advanced engineering skills of its creators.
