Chiang Mai Night Safari, Chiang Mai Overview

World’s largest and ranked second as a nocturnal zoo, Chiang Mai Night safari park is an unparalleled African-Savannah-Cross Zoological park cum night safari. It functions as a zoo by the day and night safari after dawn. Modeled after Singapore Night Safari, the Chiang Mai Night Safari provides visitors a mind-blowing experience like being out in the wilderness at night.

Spread across 320 acres, Chiang Mai Zoological Park is home to around 1400 faunae of more than 200 species from different continents worldwide. It has three animal zones where visitors can interact, feed and take pictures of wild animals like hyenas, lions, tigers, giraffes, elephants, and bears in their natural habitats. The itinerary also includes a dancing fountain and a laser light show.

The ticket entry system is divided into three categories which allows one to different levels of access throughout the Zoological Park.

Type A - Single Entry + Jaguar Trail + Laser Light Show (preferred during a daylight visit)

Type B - Single Entry + Jaguar Trail + Laser Light show + Savanna Safari and Predator Prowl on 2 different Open Tram Rides (Includes the Night Safari)

Type C - Single Entry + Jaguar Trail + Laser Light Show + 2 Daylight Tram Rides for Savanna Safari and Predator Prowl + 2 Nighttime Tram Rides for Savanna Safari and Predator Prowl (Includes the Day Safari as well as the Night Safari – access through the entire day).

Night Safari Zones

The Chiang Mai Night Safari is divided into three zones that let one experience the most extraordinary thrill of emotions amidst the flora and fauna of the Zoological Park.

1. Savanna Safari Zone – This exhibit zone permits one to visit by the African Savanna that houses more than 300 animals of 34 different species. One can spot white rhinoceroses, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, elephants, wildebeests, dee, etc. The 2.4 kilometre long trails can be covered via the daytime or nighttime Open Trams rides that take one through the wildlife and their behavioural surroundings.

2. Predator Prowl Zone – The zone is best known for spotting the nature’s most fierce predators or hunters known to humankind. The Predator Prowl zone curves around a 2.4 km trail where one can sight the carnivorous animals of more than 200 animals of 27 different species like white tigers, golden tigers, hyenas, lions, crocodiles, Asiatic black bears, waterbuck, etc.

3. Jaguar Trail Zone – This trails winds around the lake and is the only walking trail that can be covered without any tram rides. The 12-kilometre long trail paves a path surrounding a beautiful Swan Lake and the flora surrounding it. One can spot about 50 various species of nearly 400 animals and birds amidst the jungle and the nearby delightful floral garden. Animals like leopard cats, porcupines, clouded leopards, capybaras, sloth bears, Brazilian tapirs, squirrel monkeys, crowned cranes, white tiger, etc can be sighted in their wildlife enclosures.

Shows and Attractions - Timings

1. The Tiger Show – Featuring the Indochinese tigers and the white lions, leave yourself amazed while these wild cats perform various acts.
Timings: 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM Monday to Sunday, along with an extra show on Friday to Saturday at 8:30 PM.

2. Creatures of the Night Show- Watch a group of dancers making their moves, playing with fire and entertaining you in the best way possible, while you stroll your way through the night safaris. The theme of the show revolves around the activities of nocturnal animals.
Timings: Four shows take place after sundown at 6: 00 PM, 7:00 PM, 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM, every day.

3. Night Predators – This show revolves around the hunters (predators) of the night like lions, tigers, smooth-coated otters, porcupines, wild boar, and hyenas. The show explains the activities of these night predators and how they hunt for their survival.
Timings: This show starts daily at three different timings after sundown – 5:20 PM, 6:50 PM and 8:40 PM.

4. Fun Plaza – Need some cooling off at the zoo from the scorching heat, head to the Fun Plaza which embraces a13.5-meter wide fountain that shoots up water with unpredictable rhythm. Dance, hop or jump around the fountain and have a splashing good time.

Musical Fountain Show

The Musical fountain show is one of the most acclaimed shows at the Chiang Mai Night Safari after sundown. The show amazes with the utmost audiovisual experience tactfully combined with clever laser lighting and a musical aura around a giant fountain. The Fountain Show clearly takes the cake from the many shows that happen at the Chiang Mai Night Safari Park. It displays a 12 meter high and 20-meter wide German technology-based water screen that changes colour with the spring of water fountain moving according to the musical rhythms.
Timings: The show starts at 8:10 PM and 9:10 PM, Monday to Sunday.

Wildlife at Chiang Mai Night Safari

The Chiang Mai Night Safari is one of the finest nocturnal zoological park housing around 1400 animals of about 200 variant species. These faunae can be spotted habituating in the wild environment in three distinctive areas of the Park - Jaguar Trail zone, the Savanna Safari zone, and the Predator Prowl zone. The Jaguar trail familiarizes with little animals like raccoons, tapirs, otters, squirrel monkeys to average height rare animals and birds like sloth bears, clouded leopards, bearcats, crowned cranes, flamingos, crested serpent eagles, cockatoos, and hornbills, etc. One can even feed a friendly few with their bare hands like giraffes, zebras, and deer while in their time in the wildlife reservoir.

Tips

  • It is best advised to plan your visit to Chiang Mai Night Safari in advance since the three animal zones have different opening times.
  • The best time to visit Chiang Mai Night Safari is post noon since evenings are calmer than hot, humid mornings. Also, the finest experience of the Night Safari shows can be privileged by arriving at the destination in the evening, when one can spot more animals in action.
  • Avoid using flash during the night safari, as that may scare the animals away, also since flash photography strictly prohibited.
  • Carefully choose from the list of audio guided tours on trams between Thai and English language.

How To Reach Chiang Mai Night Safari

Chiang Mai Night Safari is located about 12 kilometers southwest of the Chiang Mai city center in Hangdong district. One can charter a red songthaew, take a cab or traverse via your own conveyance to the location from Chiang Mai city. Free minibuses are also available outside the tourist police office near the Night Bazaar in Chiang Mai to the Chiang Mai Night Safari Park.
