Manarola, known for its colorful houses perched on cliffs, breathtaking sea views, and rich wine-making traditions, is a favorite among photographers and travelers. It is famous for its dramatic coastal landscape, delicious seafood, and beautiful sunset views. It can be either reached by hiking from train station or by boat.
Manarola is built on steep cliffs, with narrow streets and stairways winding through the village. The main street, Via Renato Birolli, runs from the train station down to the waterfront, lined with restaurants, cafés, and gelato shops. At the harbor, small fishing boats are docked on land, and you’ll find a natural swimming area where visitors can jump into the sea from the rocks. A short walk up from the village leads to a famous panoramic viewpoint, offering one of the most iconic views in Italy, where the colorful houses appear to be stacked against the cliffs.
Manarola is also known for its wine production, particularly Sciacchetrà, a sweet dessert wine made from local vineyards. Unlike some of the other villages, Manarola is quieter at night, making it a perfect spot for a romantic getaway. Major highlights include Punta Bonfiglio, Natural Harbor, Church of San Lorenzo, Via dell’Amore, and Corniglia or Volastra hike trail.
