Monterosso , Cinque Terre Overview

Monterosso al Mare is the largest and most tourist-friendly village in Cinque Terre, Italy. It is famous for its beautiful sandy beaches, colorful houses, seafood restaurants, and historic sites. It is also known for its old town charm, hiking trails, and delicious local food. Also, only village in Cinque Terre with a large sandy beach and fewer steep hills. However due to its compact size it can feel crowded in peak season, especially on the beach and around the train station.

Monterosso is divided into two main areas: the Old Town and the New Town (Fegina). The Old Town is full of narrow streets, small shops, and traditional restaurants and the New Town is more modern, with larger hotels, a train station, and Monterosso’s famous beach. A tunnel through the hill connects the two areas, making it easy to explore both.

One of the most popular spots is Fegina Beach, the largest sandy beach in Cinque Terre. Here, visitors can rent sunbeds, swim in the clear water, or simply relax by the shore. Near the beach, you’ll find the famous Statue of Neptune (Il Gigante), a giant stone sculpture of the Roman sea god, built in 1910. Although partially damaged by storms, it remains an iconic symbol of Monterosso. For those interested in history, the Church of San Giovanni Battista, built in the 14th century, features a beautiful black-and-white striped façade and impressive Gothic architecture. Another must-visit site is the Capuchin Monastery and Church, located on a hill between the Old and New Towns.
