Colombo is studded with temples, but Bellanwila Rajamaha Vihara occupies a special place as one of the country’s most venerated Buddhist shrines. Adorned with murals of Buddha as well as Hindu gods, the temple features a central shrine and smaller shrines dedicated to popular deities of Sri Lanka such as Vishnu, Saman and Vibheeshana. Thousands of devotees flock to worship Bellanwila Rajamaha Vihara’s sacred Bo tree, supposedly the first offshoot of Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura.
