Somwarpet, Coorg Overview

Somwarpete is considered the main town of Somwarpete Taluka, which is located in the north-east part of Coorg district. This town has some beautiful attractions in its vicinity. There are various crops grown here, but the major ones include coffee and spice crops such as peppers, ginger and cardamom.

The town has a total population of less than 10,000 according to the 2011 census. The locals here speak Kodava Takk, Are Bhashe, Tulu, Beary bashe, Konkani, English and Hindi, even if the most of them are kannadigas. The town is famous for authentic Coorgie cuisine which includes non-vegetarian dishes like pork curry and Kadubittu (steamed rice dumplings), Chicken Curry & Akki Rotti (rice roti).

Major Attractions

The Beelur Golf club with it lush green grounds attract various movie makers and it is only 8 km away. Next, comes Malemalleshwara Betta which is located 13 km away and it is known for its regular poojas and grand Mahashivratri celebrations. Tourists can also visit Kotabetta, the third highest peak in Coorg, with an altitude of 1620 meters. There is a Shiva temple at the base of Kotebetta. One of the tallest waterfalls in Coorg, Mallalli Falls is where river Kumaradhara drops down 200 feet. There are several other mystifying waterfalls scattered along this stream. It is 25 km away, in the Pushpagiri hill ranges.

Adventure Sports

Go trekking at Honnamana Ker, which is a hotspot for trekking and rock climbing. Lying adjacent to it, Gavi betta and Mori betta are favourite places for adventure lovers. Take a hike in the coffee plantations to relax in the serene atmosphere. Also, head towards Honnamana Kere Lake for boating and fishing. Somwarpet also sells homemade vines. Moreover, you can have Todi in the local plantations.

How To Reach Somwarpet

Somwarpete is at a distance of 23km from Madikeri. There are several buses to take you there in less than an hour with INR 20 per person.
