The Kastellet, situated near the little mermaid statue, is one of the most popular fortresses in the world. It is constructed in a pentagonal structure, with bastions on both sides of the buildings. It is a tranquil place with two museums that have some ancient defence artefacts.
King Frederik III built the citadel in 1663, and it was later rebuilt in the 19th century, in which a star-shaped building, a moat, and a prison were added. Today it serves as an active military area for the Danish Defense Ministry. Nothing is more exciting than watching the changing of the guards organized every morning and evening at the Central Guard House. Some concerts and other regular events are held at the citadel hall, making it a popular attraction for tourists.
