Matala Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Crete, located on the island's southern edge in the Heraklion region. It spans across 300m and provides the best escape with its beautiful sandy shores, crystal clear waters and idyllic tall cliffs. In addition, it is a popular diving spot. One can jump into the sea from the cave located on the north end of the beach.
Matala Beach was a well-known hippie spot in the 1960s and 70s and is now well-equipped with beach facilities. Umbrellas, showers, snack bars and excursion boats make it the perfect choice for spending a laid-back afternoon filled with fun water adventures. The ideal time to visit the beach is just before sunset to soak in the breathtaking views of the area.
