One the most significant sites in Dien Bien Phu, A1 crater was the place where the Viet Minh registered their final victory, bringing to an end the famous Battle of Dien Bien Phu. The Viet Minh fought the battle for a whole 39 days and nights and finally reclaimed the hill by blasting it fro underneath.
This place tells the story of a crucial point in the battle of Dien Bien Phu. There are tanks and a monument devoted to Viet Minh casualties. It is also known as Elaine to the French. The Vietnamese Government has also reconstructed the maze of trenches used by the soldiers during the Battle.
The reclamation of the hill was the final nail in the French Occupation of Dien Bien Phu and Indochina. It is also known as Elaine by the French.
