Muong Thanh is a heart-shaped valley located in Dien Bien province to the northwest of Vietnam. This gorgeous basin is well-known for its natural beauty as it is surrounded by paddy fields, rivers, and stunning lakes. In fact, Dien Bien Phu is located within this valley. The famous battle of Dien Bien Phu was thus, fought right here.
Muong Thanh Valley is around 12 miles long and 3 miles wide. Nam Rom River flows through the valley which makes its soil very fertile. The land is a major rice-growing field and served as the breadbasket for Viet Nimh during the battle of 1954. The best way to travel Dien Bien Phu and the Muong Thang Valley is to rent a bike from the town and go around the stunning environs on your own.
