The Navagraha temple is a small yet significant Hindu temple that is perched atop the Chitrasal hills in Dispur in the southeastern part of Guwahati, Assam in the north-eastern part of India. This one-of-a-kind temple is dedicated to the nine planets that constitute the solar system, with each planet represented by Shivalingam, a manifestation of Lord Shiva. Since the temple is dedicated to the solar planets, it holds great importance among astrologers and astronomers. One can always find a long queue of people here who wish to appease the stars and get luck to favour them. You can also see the bird's eye view of the city from this temple, which is a stunning sight to see as well.
Other than the eight celestial bodies that can be found, the temple is also the abode of the most prominent and ninth heavenly body, which is the Sun. The Navagraha Temple is a must visit for devotees of Lord Shiva, the nine celestial planets as well as for those who are fascinated by astrology and astronomy. Built on the second highest hill of Guwahati, the temple was constructed in the 18th century, yet continues to stand strong even in the present times despite having been demolished by an earthquake once. There lies quite a unique concept behind this temple, and this is perhaps why a lot of tourists visit this temple from all parts of the country. The Indian mythology holds the celestial bodies as revered deities, and these Gods find a physical form in the Navagraha temple.
Represented by decorated sculptures, this temple has Shivalingas dedicated to the planets. This thus also makes the temple a religious center for the followers of Shiva at the same time.
The Navagraha Temple is the most famous temple of Guwahati and is believed to have been built by the Ahom King Rajeswar Singha. The structure of the temple is quite simple and elegant, with ancient inscriptions on the walls of the temple. The grace and simple charm of the temple are what intrigue tourists the most.
