Durgapur steel plant (DSP) is located in Durgapur district of West Bengal. It is one of the ventures under the Steel Authority of India (SAIL). The massive complex of the plant is an engineering lover's delight, and you can learn a great deal about the nuances of steel production. A number of large-scale operations and equipment are housed in the premises and is a great learning experience for freshers and knowledge seekers alike. However, the plant is not open to the general public and you need to be in contact with any of the employees to be able to make a visit to this destination.
Over the period, the steel plant has made an enormous contribution to the steel industry and GDP growth of India. During the initial years, the production capacity of the steel plant was 1 million tons of crude per year, which was increased to 1.6 million the later period of modernisation in the 1990's. During the 90's, the objective of the Durgapur steel plant was not just to produce crude but also the improvement in productivity and quality, conservation of energy, reduction in the cost of production & minimization of environmental pollution were the set objectives which were achieved by the time we entered in the 21st century.
