Durgapur steel plant (DSP) is located in Durgapur district of West Bengal. It is one of the ventures under the Steel Authority of India (SAIL). The massive complex of the plant is an engineering lover's delight, and you can learn a great deal about the nuances of steel production. Over the period, the steel plant has made an enormous contribution to the steel industry and GDP growth of India. During the initial years, the production capacity of the steel plant was 1 million tons of crude per year, which was increased to 1.6 million the later period of modernisation in the 1990's. During the 90's, the objective of the Durgapur steel plant was not just to produce crude but also the improvement in productivity and quality, conservation of energy, reduction in the cost of production & minimization of environmental pollution were the set objectives which were achieved by the time we entered in the 21st century.

History of Durgapur Steel Plant

The steel plant was set up in the year 1955 with the help of United Kingdom. During the period of British colonization in India, the wave of modernisation hit the country and setting a major steel plant became the need of the hour. As a result of this, the Durgapur Stee Plant was conceptualized and set up.

The eco-friendly machines

In the later period of modernisation, Durgapur steel plant adopted the environment-friendly methods to balance the steel production with ecology. The production units in the facility have the necessary pollution control facilities. The new less harmful products were installed in the plant to replace the hazardous machinery, such as coke oven batteries, CDI in Blast Furnaces, Ladle Furnaces, Bloom Caster, one bloom-cum-round caster and a new Medium Structural Mill. Further, a vast area of 1,266 acres owned by DSP has been aforestated with more than 14 lakh plants to keep the environment green and healthy.

The Durgapur steel plant township

A well-developed township has been set by Durgapur Steel Plant authorities close to the industry to accommodate the employees of the steel plant. The township has more than 25,000 housing units for the employees, spread across an area of 40 sq km. It has its power supply unit, primary and secondary school, hospital with all modern facilities and trained staff, recreational parks and clubs and a central stadium. The township has been equipped with all the modern amenities to provide a comfortable life to the human resource of Durgapur Steel Plant.
