In the heart of Edinburgh city, the Ross Fountain is positioned in the charming West Princes Street Gardens. At the top of the fountain are the featured four female figures depicting science, arts, poetry, and industry.
On taking a closer look at the base of the structure, you will see mermaids, walruses, cherubs, and lion heads. This fountain is a striking example of cast-iron work in the neoclassical style of the 19th century which is commonly called the Beaux Arts. This structure was sculpted by artist Jean-Baptiste Jules Klagmann. Notably, the fountain was exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1862. A local gunmaker, Daniel Ross (after whom it is named Ross Fountain), purchased it for GBP 2,000 in 1862 and gifted it to the city. Subsequently, it was transported to Leith in 1869 in 122 pieces. After adeptly joining these pieces, it got installed at its current position in 1872. This special landmark of Edinburgh fountain was re-inaugurated in 2018, painted in turquoise, gold, & brown colors.
