"The Wind City of Morocco"

Essaouira Tourism

A port city and resort on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, Essaouira is a picturesque old town surrounded by sea and city walls dating back to the 18th century. With its bohemian vibe, Essaouira is a great place to wander around the Medina and souks or stroll through its beautiful art galleries.

Distinctive to its neighbouring town of Marrakech, around 180 kms from the city, Essaouira offers stunning views of the sea, the Medina and the fortress surrounding the city. The Medina at Essaouira has also been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Crescent beach at Essaouira is a hot spot for water sports lovers, offering a variety of experiences, including surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Camels, horses and quads can be hired for beach rides outside Vagabond. In addition, cruises and Yachts can be hired at the Ranch de Diabet beach to explore countryside areas around the seashore. The medieval seaside town of Essaouira boasts a quaint lifestyle with stunning white and blue houses against the lovely seashore. It is an excellent retreat for those looking to have a relaxing holiday in Morocco.

History of Essaouira

The first known settlement of Essaouira can be dated back to the 5th century B.C. . The Phoenicians first inhabited the site, which the Carthaginians and Romans later occupied; this was documented in the travelogues of the Carthaginian traveller Hanno. However, the town of Essaouira was much later discovered in the late 17th century. Further, a Jewish colony was established to enhance trade and commerce in Morocco.

Shopping in Essaouira

Essaouira boasts a vibrant shopping atmosphere, with all sorts of products ranging from clothing and accessories to curtains, rugs, bed throws, handcrafted crockery and pottery ware, and basic souvenirs like magnets, trinkets, postcards and jewelry. The central shopping street is along Avenue Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah, which is quite famous for touristy souvenirs. However, with popularity comes peaked prices, so don't forget to negotiate with prices. Running parallel to this street is Avenue Oqba Ibn Nafiaa, studded with souvenir shops around the beach. Rue Sakala, around the main ramparts, is another tourist favorite for ceramics, woodwork and art.

Suggested Itinerary for Essaouira

Day 1: Start at the main square market in Medina, as mornings are the best time to visit the old town. You can shop for souvenirs and other things at this market. After strolling through the beautiful Medina, head to the Essaouira fort, placed in the heart of this region. After exploring the most popular attraction of Essaouira, take a stroll towards the port side, right behind the fort. Here you can spend some time by the boats, listening to the sound of the sea and the seagulls.

The city walls of Essaouira are split up by gates known as Babs. Since vehicles aren't allowed in Medina, the area feels like a different world. Head out to the Bab Doukkala, an off-beat location in town and take a stroll towards the other side. Find a cute café with a rooftop or individual balconies and watch the stunning sunset of Essaouira while sipping on some authentic mint tea. In addition, you can also walk towards Skala de la Ville, a popular Game of Thrones location, to watch the sunset.

Day 2: You can start your day at Bab Sbaa, one of the more touristy areas in Medina. Studded with cute cafés and stores, spend some time here and stay for brunch. Next, head out to the beach and experience the 'windy city of Essaouira. You can also try surfing, windsurfing or kitesurfing here. You can also swim in the clear waters. Finally, watch the sunset from the beach, overlooking Essaouira's contrasting blue and white buildings, while munching some snacks and beverages on the shacks.
