Chapel of Bones in Faro is a unique and macabre site located behind the Igreja do Carmo (Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel). Inaugurated in 1816, this small chapel measures approximately 4 by 6 meters and is constructed using the bones of over 1,000 Carmelite monks. The walls and ceiling are adorned with skulls and bones arranged in intricate patterns, serving as a poignant reminder of mortality.
An inscription above the chapel's entrance reads: "Pára aqui a considerar que a este estado hás-de chegar," translating to "Stop here and consider, that you will reach this state too." This message invites visitors to reflect on the transient nature of life as they observe the solemn displays within.
