Listed by UNESCO, the National Maritime Archaeology Museum occupies a 1671-built Dutch warehouse above the Galle Fort Old Gate. The museum introduces Sri Lanka’s history of navigation, marine life, and anthropology, with 3,600 archaeological exhibits. The displays include sea-faring, maritime trade, scaled-down whale models, natural coral beds, deep sea fish, and life-size dioramas of traditional fishing.
The National Museum building is the longest Dutch building in Southeast Asia, with its 130 m long outer wall. The city of Halle has long been a port in Sri Lanka, increasing this museum's importance. The museum beautifully depicts the transitions in navigation from the past to the present and, eventually, the future. The museum holds many exhibits ranging from model boat ships found at sea to ancient amphora, coins, bronzes, anchors, statues, cannons, and so on.
