The Derinkuyu Underground City is the deepest underground city in Cappadocia, with an impressive depth of 85 metres. It is a giant labyrinth of cave-like rooms with an elaborate ventilation system, connecting passageways, and discrete entrances. With huge well-lit passages, explore every part of the city, including churches, schools, wine cellars, livestock and food storage places, graveyards, and communal places where people could eat, meet, and worship together.
Another fascinating aspect is the river beneath the city that served as the water source. One can also see the irrigation system that supplies water to each level, which is intact even after thousands of years. For those looking for a quick adventure and who are comfortable being underground and in the dark, this marvel of history and insane architecture is surely a must-visit. The Derinkuyu city, much like the Kaymakli and the others, was made by the Christians to hide during raids. It is the deepest of the 36 underground cities in Cappadocia, and the tunnels become smaller and smaller as you go deeper, so if you're claustrophobic, it's best to avoid this place.
