Goygol

Goygol, located in the western part of Azerbaijan, is a picturesque district known for its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. One of the main attractions in the region is the Goygol National Park. It was built to conserve the clearwater lakes located in the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, including the famous Goygol Lake. The Goygol Lake is surrounded by pristine forests and standing at an elevation of 1,500 meters above sea level. It is known for its scenic beauty. It was formed by a huge earthquake in 1139 that caused the rocks from the peak of Mount Kapaz to fall and block the Akhsu river below.

Beyond its natural wonders, Goygol has a fascinating cultural heritage shaped by its diverse inhabitants. In 1819, the village of Helenendorf, now known as Goygol, was founded, marking the beginning of Azerbaijan's German colonization. Despite the deportation of the German population by Stalin in 1941, traces of their presence still linger in the town's old German streets, adorned with towering plane trees. Notably, the Goygol Winery, established during the German settlement showcases the region's longstanding tradition of winemaking.

Exploring Goygol reveals a tapestry of historical landmarks and architectural gems. Among the notable attractions is the Victor Klein House, once the residence of Goygol's last German inhabitant and now a museum preserving the town's cultural legacy. Additionally, Azerbaijan's first Lutheran church, built in 1854, is also situated here and now houses a small museum collection.
