Must-Know Travel Essentials

Prague finds a special place in the world of history. This capital city of the Czech Republic and the historical capital of Bohemia is situated on the banks of the river Vltava, with a population of about 3.1 million people.

The city has been a seat of significant European cultural, political, and economic developments. It takes pride in displaying the heritage of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. Several Roman emperors, including the most famous Charles IV (r. 1346–1378), resided here. It has been written that the city was founded as Boihaem in 1306 BC by an ancient king, Boyya.

Given its rich historical and cultural heritage, the city is famous for its well-known cultural attractions. Since 1992, the historic center of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. It is popularly called the "city of a thousand spires", which points to its historical 1,100-year-old skyline with domes, churches, and towers. It is one of the best-preserved historic city centers in Europe. Its multidimensional attractions make it a perfect destination for fans of culture and heritage, art and architecture, food, and music.

Places to visit in Prague

  • Charles Bridge: Bridge connects not only roads but also people. This medieval stone arch bridge on River Vltava with 516 meters in length and nearly 10 meters wide. It is a perfect place to take a stroll. Charles Bridge was the most important connection between Prague Castle and the city's Old Town and adjacent areas until 1841. This land connection made Prague important as a trade route between Eastern and Western Europe.
  • Prague Castle: This castle is the official residence of the President of the Czech Republic. One can enjoy the many buildings, gardens, and courtyards here. It is divided into several distinct areas. As per the Guinness Book of Records, Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in the world, occupying almost 70,000 square meters. The castle is among Prague's most visited tourist attractions, attracting over 1.8 million visitors annually.
  • Wenceslas Square: Apart from heritage sightseeing, one needs some leisure time to relax. The National Museum and numerous other architectural treasures can be visited at Wenceslas Square. This has an excellent combination of shopping centers and food joints. It also has a space that is used for staging protests and demonstrations.
  • St Cythius and St Methodical Cathedral: The basilica, which measures 75 meters in length, 31 meters in width, and 27.5 meters in height, is one of the most significant religious buildings in Prague constructed in the Romanesque style.
  • Prague Astronomical Clock: We all see time on our watch / regular clock, but this clock is an ancient clock that is still used in Prague as a respect to the catholic saints. This is because it shows the time of the moon and sun and predicts the eclipses. The dial also shows the year's months, which is why it is astronomical.
  • Strahov Monastery: This is a sacred monument in the Strahov district of Prague, which is about a 20-minute walk from Prague Castle. It is said to be one of the oldest existing monasteries in the world. The complex has the famous Strahov Library and Picture Gallery, the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Abbey Building, and the Convent Building. Strahov Library has over 200 thousand books stored in its unique depository. In addition, visitors can enjoy local specialties in its Great Monastery Restaurant and the Strahov Monastery Brewery.
  • St. Vitus Cathedral: Dedicated to Saint Vitus, it is the largest and most important church in the Czech Republic and one of Prague's most popular tourist attractions. The cathedral is located on the hilltop overlooking the city within the Prague Castle Complex, which is like a small town with several grand buildings, gardens, and courtyards. The palace complex is the largest worldwide and took several centuries to complete. Royal Families had their weddings and burials in the cathedral.
  • Old Jewish Cemetery: This, one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the world, is in the Josefov, the Jewish Quarter, one block away from the famous Old-New Synagogue. It holds around 12,000 visible tombstones in a small yard, only a tiny part of the thousands of graves buried below. There are two significant graves here - the oldest, which belongs to the poet Avigdor Kara and the famous grave of Jehuda ben Bezalel, known for creating the “Golem of Prague.”
  • Prague Zoological Garden: Apart from visiting non-living monuments, it is interesting to be in the company of nature. The Prague Zoo is 4 km from downtown Prague, well known for breeding the rare Przewalski’s horse. This municipal zoo was opened in 1931 and occupies 45 hectares (111 acres) of land. It is home to over 2,300 specimens spanning 465 species. It also has a substantial collection of Asiatic animals, South American and Australian species. In addition, the zoo is known for breeding maned wolves, two-toed sloths, cheetahs, and kulan - a species of the endangered Asiatic wild ass.

Things to do in Prague

  • Enjoy mouthwatering food: Try the world-famous long pastry called Tredlink at every corner of Prague. The next is Goulash, a little salty dish, like a kind of dumpling/momos eaten dry, and is one of the best specialties usually eaten with paprika. For nonvegetarians, the best dish to try is grilled sausages, known as Grilovanne Klobassy, eaten on bread as a hot dog. This has a unique taste of pickled-flavored cheese, and it is something unique that you can only find in Prague. Finally, if you want liquid accompaniment, try what Prague is known for - Moravian Wine made freshly from the farmland vineyards 150 miles from Prague.
  • Taste the famous Prague beer: Since the Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita in the world, it is also home to one of the best beers in the world. The most common Czech beers are pale lagers of the pilsner type. It comes in transparent golden color with high foaminess and a mild flavor. Prague Beer is easily affordable, as the average price of beer is about 35 CSK (Czech Crowns).
  • Enjoy the nightlife: Prague is as famous as its sightseeing marvels. It brightens up once the sun goes down. From traditional beer halls, street musicians, dance clubs, jazz bars, and wine shops to pubs, cafes, and casinos, the city gives you several options to enjoy your nights in this heart of Europe.
  • Experience the festivals : Prague has a rich cultural heritage, and people enjoy festivals and celebrations. From Halloween to Christmas and New Year, all festivals are celebrated enthusiastically, accompanied by rum cake, wine, and chocolates.
  • Take a leap of faith with skydiving: Prague is famous for its tandem skydiving. It is a popular adventure activity to do here. It is an out-of-the-world experience that allows fantastic views of the beautiful countryside in the Czech Republic from about 4000 meters above the land. The young, excited, and highly experienced team of tandem instructors, cameramen, packers, and ground staff look after the skydivers with special care.
  • Check your target at a shooting range: Even if you do not have a gun license, you can feel the professional soldier's experience while shooting with a professional team in Prague. This should be on your bucket list. You can try this fantastic activity by choosing from the range of pistols, machine guns, and assault rifles. You also get proper equipment, including ear protection, protective vests, targets, etc., to make it an enjoyable and safe experience. The shooting range is in the city center of Prague.
  • Take a vintage car tour: This memorable experience can start right at your hotel door. You can enjoy breathtaking sights and scenic views of Prague on this tour while traveling in a vintage car. Professional driver cum local guide will tell you tales of the sights, including Prague Castle and Old Town. The tour generally includes hotel pick up and drop off.
  • Hiking to sunrise and sunset points: Prague can be beautifully captured on camera at some of the best viewpoints at sunrise. One can overlook the city center of Prague by hiking on Petrin Hill. That is where you can see Prague Castle, Mala Strana, and the Old Town with Charles Bridge. Petrin Hill stretches from Castle District to Smichov in Prague 5 district. However, Petrin Hill and the surrounding area have many places to observe sunrises and sunsets.
  • Visiting animal sanctuary and conservation Centre: Prague Zoo is intensely involved in protecting animal species, whether they live under human care or in their natural habitats. Prague’s Zoological Gardens help protect endangered species by successfully breeding them and by helping to protect species in their natural habitats. Also, nature conservation is advanced here because of educational and awareness-raising activities wherein visitors can participate.

Best time to visit Prague

To travel to Prague, the best time is during Spring and Autumn. The months between June and September are also considered the best, as the weather is excellent and several festivals and events are lined up during this time. Winter is harsh, but if you want to enjoy the white Prague and snowy surroundings apart from illuminated Christmas markets and festivities, plan a visit in December.

Ideal duration for Prague

About five days to enjoy and explore the different aspects of the city is a good enough time. Exploring the city's hidden gems, visiting monuments, taking a stroll in its beautiful gardens, and enjoying its food and nightlife will truly mesmerize you. The city’s beauty, past, and presence will take you to a new world.

How to reach Prague

Prague has good air connectivity. Václav Havel Airport, named after Czechoslovakia's last president, is Prague's international airport. It is located at the edge of the Prague-Ruzyn? area, next to Kn??eves village, 12 km west of the center of Prague and 12 km southeast of Kladno.

FAQs on Prague Tour Packages

Can you do a day trip from Prague to Budapest?

No, a day trip from Prague to Budapest is not practical due to the travel time (5-7 hours one way). A minimum of 2 days is recommended to fully explore Budapest. If time is limited, visiting Vienna from Prague (3.5 hours by train) is a better day-trip option.

Is Prague close to Budapest?

Prague and Budapest are approximately 530 km (330 miles) apart. The journey takes about 6.5 hours by train, 5 hours by bus, and 1 hour by flight.

What is Prague famous for?

Prague is famous for its medieval architecture, Prague Castle (the largest ancient castle in the world), Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, and Astronomical Clock. The city is also known for its pub culture, world-class beer, gothic churches, and vibrant nightlife. Additionally, it has a rich Jewish heritage and historical landmarks like the Old Jewish Cemetery and Spanish Synagogue.

Which is nicer, Prague or Budapest?

Both cities offer incredible experiences, but they cater to different preferences. Prague is known for its fairy-tale architecture, charming Old Town, and romantic atmosphere, while Budapest boasts impressive riverfront views, thermal baths, and a vibrant nightlife scene. If you love history, castles, and medieval charm, Prague is better. If you enjoy spa culture, river cruises, and grand architecture, Budapest is a great choice.

Is Prague expensive to visit?

Compared to Western European cities like Paris or London, Prague is more affordable, but it is slightly more expensive than Budapest. Accommodation and food in the Old Town can be pricey, but public transport, beer, and traditional Czech meals are budget-friendly. Staying in less touristy areas and using the Prague City Card for discounts can help manage expenses.

What is the best time to visit Prague?

The best time to visit Prague is April to June (spring) and September to October (autumn) when the weather is mild and the crowds are smaller. Summer (July-August) is peak tourist season, making attractions crowded and expensive. December is a magical time to visit Prague for its Christmas markets, while winter (January-February) is the cheapest time but can be very cold.

How many days are enough for the Prague Tour Packages?

A 3 to 4-day trip is ideal for exploring Prague’s main attractions, allowing time for sightseeing, a river cruise, and cultural experiences. If planning day trips to Český Krumlov, Karlovy Vary, or Terezín, a 5 to 6-day package is recommended. Travelers on a multi-city European tour typically spend 2 to 3 days in Prague before moving to Vienna or Budapest.

What can you do on the Prague Tour?

A Prague tour includes exploring its stunning medieval Old Town, iconic Charles Bridge, and the magnificent Prague Castle. Visitors can cruise along the Vltava River, enjoy traditional Czech cuisine, and visit historical landmarks like the Astronomical Clock and St. Vitus Cathedral. For beer lovers, Prague offers some of the best and most affordable beer in Europe, and a visit to a traditional Czech brewery is a must. Nightlife is vibrant, with pub crawls, jazz clubs, and classical music concerts being popular activities.

Which destinations are usually travelled together with Prague?

Prague is often combined with nearby European cities for a well-rounded tour. Popular pairings include Vienna (Austria) and Budapest (Hungary), forming the classic Central European itinerary known as the Prague-Vienna-Budapest circuit. Other frequently visited destinations include Berlin (Germany), which is just 4.5 hours by train, and Salzburg (Austria), famous for its musical heritage. Many also add Switzerland, Paris, or Amsterdam to their itinerary for a multi-country European experience. Within the Czech Republic, day trips to Český Krumlov, Karlovy Vary, or Kutná Hora are highly recommended.
