Regional Science Centre, Guwahati Overview

Located in Jawaharnagar Khanapara, on the outskirts of Guwahati, Regional Science Centre is one of the 27 centres maintained and administered by Government of India’s National Council of Science Museums. Locally known as Science Museum, the depository is a wonderful initiative by the science fraternity to educate, enlighten and entertain the visitors through the medium of science and technology. Established in the year 1994, the museum houses rare instruments, machinery, rare science equipments, demo experiment setups etc. The Science centre also boasts of interactive displays to learn from, both for kids and adults, ranging from everyday activities to prehistoric exhibits and non-formal science education.

With the idea to spread the awareness of science in everyday life, the museum has grown as an able forum to propagate the original idea. In addition to the permanent galleries showcasing various exhibits, the museum also has a dynamic science park, a mock prehistoric park, a superb 3D animation theatre, a spacious auditorium, an inbuilt aquarium etc. Besides, the centre conducts regulated science shows, workshops and lectures for students and interested adults. The indoor and outdoor experiments, fun mirrors, science games are a brilliant way to inculcate knowledge and are a fun learning experience.

3D Show at Regional Science Museum

Guwahati Science Museum boasts of being the first in all of North-East to come up with stereoscopic digital 3D cinema projection facility. Designed to thrill our senses, the polarizer tricks our eyes into believing that the picture before you is live. Combined with the effect of 3D glasses, the crazy videos gives you an extreme adrenaline rush and leaves you with an all around thrilling experience.

Another highlight of the museum is the Digital Planetarium which provides you with a unique experience of artificial sky gazing. It introduces you to the space dynamics, comets and other heavenly bodies out there in the universe.

Other Activities at Regional Science Museum

1. Magic and Miracle Show enlightens the guests against the misuse and superstitions of magic and in the process educates them to the wonders of science through which this ‘magic’ becomes possible.
2. Super Cold Show demonstrates experiments on different elements to exhibit different behaviours on being exposed to super cold conditions. The prime element of this experiment is Liquid nitrogen.
3. Sky Observation Programmes enable the visitors to witness celestial bodies and far away stars, meteors and comets in the universe with the help of 6” Refractive Telescope.
4. The special TV Show educated the audience about the art of film-making and different phenomenon involved in the process of developing an image including photoshop and other softwares.
5. A tiny Butterfly Park is created demonstrating the lifecycle of a butterfly from its nascent stage.

Facilities at Regional Science Museum

1. An auditorium with a seating facility of 150 is available at the museum which is used for seminars, workshops, lectures and education conferences.
2. A Conference Hall with a seating capacity of 50 members is also available which is booked for various forums and discussions.
3. The centre also has an inhouse library for internal use with more than 10000 books and journals.
4. An open garden space within the premises is utilised for picnicking, open cooking and dining.
5. A tiny cafeteria is the go-to place to munch snacks and refresh.
6. Hobby Camps are organized in the summer vacations for students to provide them with a learning experience while having fun.

Training Programs at Regional Science Museum

1. Regional Science Museum conducts a Teachers’ Training Programme every year during the summer holidays. Through this course, the teachers in the making are trained on how to incorporate the use of everyday activities and instruments in order to impart knowledge on science and technology.
2. Computer Training Programme helps the housewives, senior citizens and others to learn the basics of computer and current technology.

Best Time To Visit Regional Science Centre

Guwahati has a very pleasant winter climate, we recommend to visit it in winters. Summers are equally good, with hot days and pleasant evenings. However, we advise you against visiting in monsoon as the area receives heavy rainfall and is swamped with water.

How To Reach Regional Science Centre, Guwahati

Guwahati is well connected through state-run buses, taxi cabs and auto rickshaws. You can either drive down or hire a private vehicle. Alternatively, you can take a public bus uptil Khanapara and walk down to the museum or maybe hire a local rickshaw.
