Amos Rex, Helsinki Overview

Amos Rex is a contemporary art museum located within the historic Lasipalatsi building and is known for its underground domed galleries and integration of modern architecture with historical elements. These domes double as skylights, allowing natural light to enhance the art displays. It focuses on cutting-edge contemporary art with immersive and experimental exhibitions, often featuring international artists.

The museum's design is a harmonious blend of old and new. The original Lasipalatsi ("Glass Palace"), constructed in 1936, is a prime example of functionalist architecture, featuring clean lines and minimalist aesthetics. As part of the Amos Rex project, this historic building was meticulously restored to preserve its architectural integrity. Beneath the Lasipalatsi Square, a series of domed, underground exhibition spaces were created, designed by JKMM Architects. These domes not only provide expansive, column-free interiors but also emerge above ground as sculptural skylights, adding a distinctive topography to the plaza. This innovative design allows natural light to permeate the galleries below, enhancing the visitor experience.
