Ateneum Art Museum is Finland's premier art institution, centrally located in Helsinki adjacent to the main railway station. Established in 1887, it is renowned for housing the nation's most extensive collection of classical art, encompassing over 4,300 paintings and 750 sculptures. The museum houses "The Wounded Angel" by Hugo Simberg, voted Finland's "national painting" in 2006. It also regularly hosts lectures, workshops, and special exhibitions.
Designed by architect Theodor Höijer, the Ateneum building was completed in 1887 and stands as a testament to neo-Renaissance architecture. The façade is adorned with busts of classical artists—architect Bramante, painter Raphael, and sculptor Phidias—symbolizing the foundational arts. Caryatids representing sculpture, painting, geometry, and architecture support the pediment, which features the Goddess of Art, Pallas Athene. The Latin inscription "Concordia res parvae crescunt" ("With concord, small things increase") reflects the collaborative spirit behind the museum's establishment.
