Kaivopuisto, Helsinki Overview

Kaivopuisto is one of Helsinki's oldest and most cherished parks, located in the southern part of the city, bordered by the Gulf of Finland. Established in 1834, this expansive park offers visitors a blend of lush green spaces, rocky terrains, and scenic coastal views. It's a favored spot for both locals and tourists seeking relaxation, outdoor activities, and picturesque vistas of the archipelago. The park is especially popular during May Day (Vappu) celebrations and in winter, its slopes become a hub for sledding and snow activities.

In the early 19th century, spa culture was flourishing across Europe. Recognizing an opportunity, businessman Henrik Borgström leased the land in 1834 to develop a spa resort. The Kaivopuisto Spa opened in 1838, attracting high society from Helsinki and St. Petersburg. Designed by German gardener Carl Helm, the park featured winding paths, ornamental ponds, and diverse plantings. Although the spa's popularity waned after 15 years, the park remained a beloved recreational area.
