Kauppatori

Market Square, Helsinki Overview

Kauppatori, known in English as the Market Square, is a vibrant and central square in Helsinki. Situated at the eastern end of Esplanadi, it borders the Baltic Sea to the south and the Katajanokka district to the east. This bustling marketplace is renowned for its lively atmosphere, offering a variety of traditional Finnish foods, fresh produce, handicrafts, and souvenirs. Visitors can also enjoy outdoor cafés that provide local delicacies amidst picturesque views of the harbor. It also serves as a departure point for ferries to nearby islands.

Notably, from spring to autumn, vendors set up stalls selling an array of goods, making it a focal point for both locals and tourists. A highlight of the year is the annual Helsinki herring market, held in early October, celebrating a tradition that dates back to 1743. Adjacent to Kauppatori is the Old Market Hall, Helsinki's oldest market hall, which began operations in 1889. Designed by architect Gustaf Nyström, the hall houses around 20 vendors and cafés, predominantly offering food products. It has become a popular tourist attraction, providing a cozy indoor space to explore Finnish culinary delights.
