Renowned for its cohesive neoclassical architecture, the square is framed by four significant buildings: Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the University of Helsinki's main building, and the National Library of Finland. It is a convenient starting point for exploring Helsinki and seasonal events, such as the Helsinki Christmas Market, add a festive charm to the square during the winter months.

Designed by architect Carl Ludvig Engel between 1822 and 1852, Senate Square serves as a central hub for cultural events, political gatherings.  The surrounding buildings, such as Helsinki Cathedral and the National Library, have their own operating hours and may charge entry fees for certain areas or exhibitions.
