Uspenski Cathedral is a prominent Eastern Orthodox church located on a hillside in Helsinki's Katajanokka district, offering panoramic views of the city and its harbor. The interior's rich iconography and serene atmosphere offer a contrast to the city's more austere Lutheran churches. It showcases the Russian Revival style, characterized by its red-brick façade and multiple onion domes.
Designed by Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev, the cathedral is surmounted by 13 gilded domes, symbolizing Christ and the twelve apostles. Its interior is adorned with intricate icons, chandeliers, and an impressive iconostasis painted by Pavel S. Shiltsov. The cathedral's construction was completed in 1868, and it has since served as a central place of worship for the Orthodox community in Helsinki.
