Lakkos

Lakkos is a unique district in Heraklion that will please your eyes with colorful murals painted on the walls of old buildings, quiet abandoned low-raised houses and vibrant streets that indulge you in memories of ancient Greece. It is similar to an outdoor gallery where artists can stay in the old homes under the residency program and contribute to the reformation of Lakkos by painting the spaces.

You can roam around in Lakkos and find fascinating art ideas in the narrow streets of distinct artistry. The Lakkos area used to be the red light area of Heraklion in the early 20th century, housing drug dealers, prostitutes, and social outcasts until it was bombarded in the second world war. Artist Mathew Haplin transformed the district by decorating abandoned houses and public spaces with illustrations, paintings, and murals. Kafeneio O Lakkos is now a famous region in Lakkos to enjoy a drink and dine with friends in this artistic region.
