Nikos Kazantzakis Grave is the tomb of the renowned Cretan writer, Nikos Kazantzakis, situated at the Martinengo Bastion, the highest spot on the walls of Heraklion. The location is quiet, offering the city view from atop, where the writer was buried outside his hometown. The grave has a phrase written over it: "I hope for nothing, I fear for nothing, I am free”.
Kazantzakis had written many controversial books that questioned Christianity and faith in god. He was banished from the Greek Orthodox Church in 1955 after he wrote the book: The Last Temptation of Christ”. Nikos died of Leukaemia in 1957 and was buried in his hometown, following his will, but not in the Christian cemetery due to the ex-communication by Christians. The tomb also has his second wife buried near his grave.
