As a result of the town’s location on New Zealand’s west coast and the effects of Hokitika Beach, it is peculiarly warm during the winters and cool during the summers. This is a result of the sea currents being blown towards land. Therefore the summer months are often rainy. The best time to visit Hokitika is during the winter (June - August) as these are the driest months. This allows you to visit Hokitika Gorge under dry conditions and gives you the chance to try any of the walking trails or natural attractions in the area.
