Completed in the year 2004, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayn Mandir in Houston is a popular Hindu temple built upon the principles of the Shilpa Shastras. The largest in the state, it consists of the open-air temple building, a haveli, a surrounding deck, open grounds and an Understanding Hinduism exhibition.
Within the temple are several shrines which house deities (murtis) such as Swaminarayan (the central deity), Gunatitanand Swami, Ganapati, Shiva-Parvati and more. It is open throughout the week and engages in practices such as singing hymns, bathing the deities, offering food to them and then distributing it amongst the devotees, and performing the aarti five times a day. Moreover, it organises different programs such as classes for Hindu music, Gujarati language, religious teachings as well as seminars and live performances by students.
