Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden also called as Royal Botanical Garden of Kolkata is located in Shibpur Howrah. It is famous for a wide variety of over 1400 plant species it has. The garden spreads over an area of 269 acres of land and is believed to have helped establish the trade of Tea in Assam and the Himalayan regions.
The garden is also the Central National Herbarium since 1793 when William Roxburgh, a renowned botanist — developed an elaborate and extensive herbarium with plants sourced from all over the world. As of today, the garden has 2.5 million samples. It is maintained by the Botanical Survey of India and has been one of the hotspots for botanists and students interested in the subject. But, the premise is also open for tourists who wish to absorb the tranquil atmosphere and feel closer to nature.
