Fort Carnot History & Significance

The French built the fort around 1900, seven years after Indo-China war during which the colonized Laos. It housed about 30 Vietnamese and Lao soldiers who were headed by a few French officers. After Laos gained independence in 1954, the Royal Lao Army took over the fort, using the buildings as barracks and also for accommodation.

A part of the fort is in ruins, and a section of these barracks remain today along with two watchtowers at the southern and northern ends. There are ruins of a kitchen and a prison at the south entrance. A museum is being constructed to exhibit the remains and the history of this fort.
