Profitis Ilias Monastery, Hydra Overview
Prophet Elias Monastery is an architectural monument, located on the top of Mount Profitias Ilias, near Pyros. It is famous for its stunning fortress, museum and panoramic views of the island. It is one of the oldest monasteries in Greece.
The monastery has a museum with a collection of Byzantine icons and sculptures, ecclesiastical items, and rare handwritten books. It also conducts workshops on candlemaking, shoe making and printing. The monks who live here still produce wine which is available for purchase along with other products. Apart from the museum, the monastery is surrounded by four churches and has a beautiful bell tower.
