Located within the premises of Thangapat Mapal Palace Compound in Imphal East, Three Mothers Art Gallery is a museum that showcases the rich culture, tradition, history and heritage of the state through Driftwood Sculpture Art. The art gallery cum museum is run by the artist Shri Gurumayum Shyamsunder Sharma and the museum is situated in a single shed like room within an area of 1000 square feet. Established in 1978, the art gallery is named so because it signifies the three mothers - motherland, mother tongue and mother of self.
The art works exhibited in the museum link all the ideas to the natural roots of the trees. The gallery exhibits are considered unique as they are all carved from a single piece of tree- the roots. Among the most notable items in the museum are chairs animal figures, carvings of famous personalities and other mythological figurines. Other than that, there are pieces with carved battle scenes on wood, indigenous wildlife, mythological creatures with bodies of half humans and half animals. The artist was even lauded by the Limca Book of Records for his work called the Wooden Artistic Figure (Symbol of Peace) in 2005. The themes of all his artistic works are inspired from either nature, mythology or history.
