Alpine Zoo, Innsbruck Overview

Alpine Zoo Innsbruck (Alpenzoo Innsbruck) is a unique zoological park located at an elevation of 750 meters, making it one of Europe's highest zoos. Situated at the foot of the Nordkette mountain range, just above Innsbruck's city center, the zoo offers visitors an opportunity to explore the diverse fauna of the Alpine region. It is home to approximately 2,000 animals representing 150 species.

Established in 1962 by Austrian zoologist Hans Psenner, the Alpine Zoo has played a pivotal role in the conservation and reintroduction of endangered species such as the bearded vulture, Alpine ibex, and northern bald ibis. The zoo's exhibits are thoughtfully designed to reflect the natural environments of its inhabitants, ranging from mammals and birds to reptiles and amphibians. Notable attractions include a comprehensive freshwater aquarium showcasing over 50 species of Alpine fish, recognized as one of the largest of its kind globally.

The zoo is accessible via a 20-minute walk from Innsbruck's historic city center. Alternatively, visitors can utilize the Hungerburgbahn funicular, which connects the city center to the zoo's vicinity. Combination tickets that include both the funicular ride and zoo admission are available for convenience. While the zoo's mountainous terrain offers scenic views, some pathways are steep; however, facilities are largely accessible to wheelchair users and families with strollers. Amenities include a café with panoramic views, a gift shop, and designated picnic areas.
