The Brienz Rothorn Railway is a historic steam-powered cogwheel train departing from Brienz, Switzerland, approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of Interlaken. It ascends to the Brienzer Rothorn summit at 2,244 meters (7,362 feet), providing panoramic views of over 690 mountain peaks and Lake Brienz. The railway operates seasonally, typically from early June to late October. The summit area offers hiking trails for various skill levels.
Visitors can expect a memorable experience aboard vintage steam locomotives, with opportunities for photography and alpine exploration. Facilities include restrooms and a gift shop at the base station, as well as dining options at the summit. Given the train's open windows, it's advisable to dress warmly, as temperatures can be cooler at higher elevations. Additionally, the steam and occasional soot from the locomotive may affect those seated near the front; selecting seats further back can mitigate this.
