St. Beatus Caves are located on the northeastern shore of Lake Thun, near Interlaken. These limestone caves extend deep into the Niederhorn Massif and are renowned for their impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations, subterranean waterfalls, and expansive halls. The site also features a museum, an on-site Restaurant and a chapel.
According to legend, St. Beatus, a monk from Ireland, took refuge in these caves after driving away a dragon in the 6th century. Visitors can explore approximately one kilometer of the cave system on well-lit, secure pathways. The tour typically takes about an hour and leads through narrow passages and spacious grottos, offering a captivating underground experience. The site also features a museum that provides insights into the caves' geology and history.
